The Denby Dilemma

What do we make of this divulgence; what was Denby's thinking progression?
- ' Avatar is more beautiful than all other beautiful films I've seen in recent years. Such distinction is possible and meaningful; I am capable of making it; and it has value for thousands of people .'
- 'Avatar is the only visually notable motion picture I've seen in years'.
- 'Avatar blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.'
The first choice seems unlikely: it's too scrupulous a foundation for the lazy indulgence at hand. The other possibilities are harder to dismiss.
