The Denby Dilemma

'James Cameron's Avatar is the most beautiful film I've seen in years,' prominent critic David Denby opens his review in The New Yorker.

What do we make of this divulgence; what was Denby's thinking progression?
  1. ' Avatar is more beautiful than all other beautiful films I've seen in recent years. Such distinction is possible and meaningful; I am capable of making it; and it has value for thousands of people .'
  2. 'Avatar is the only visually notable motion picture I've seen in years'.
  3. 'Avatar blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.'
The first choice seems unlikely: it's too scrupulous a foundation for the lazy indulgence at hand. The other possibilities are harder to dismiss.
